Is the 6.7L Power Stroke a Reliable Engine?

Ford introduced the 6.7L Power Stroke in 2011 as its first in-house diesel V8, and it earned a name for strong power and better reliability than the engines before it. Owners and shops widely consider it one of the most dependable heavy-duty diesel engines on the road today. A well-maintained truck can often pass 300,000 miles without a major internal failure.


That said, no engine is perfect. Early trucks from 2011 and 2012 had more turbocharger and glow plug issues than later years. Ford made real upgrades starting in 2015, and again in 2020, which strengthened internal components and improved the fuel system. So a 2015-or-newer truck tends to run more trouble-free than an early model.


What "reliable" means changes depending on how you use the truck. A daily driver has different needs than a fleet truck pulling loads five days a week. Either way, the engine is only as strong as its maintenance record.


One thing we see constantly on Denver calls is a truck losing power climbing I-70 because a small boost leak went unnoticed for months. It's rarely one big failure. It's usually a handful of small things stacking up until the truck can't keep up on a grade.

How Denver's Altitude Affects Power Stroke Performance

Thinner air means less oxygen for combustion, and that affects every diesel engine to some degree. But a turbocharged engine like the 6.7L Power Stroke handles it far better than an older, naturally aspirated design. A turbo compresses incoming air before it reaches the cylinder, which makes up for a good chunk of what altitude takes away.


Naturally aspirated engines can lose roughly 3% of their power for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Turbocharged engines cut that loss roughly in half. Towing up a long grade asks more of the turbo, the cooling system, and the fuel injection system all at once. If any of those are already weak, altitude is what exposes it. Colder temperatures at elevation also thicken oil slightly, which adds a small amount of drag until the engine warms up.


Older trucks without updated altitude calibration can struggle more than newer ones. A shop that checks boost pressure, EGT readings, and turbo response as part of a real inspection will catch this before it becomes a breakdown on the highway.

Common Power Stroke Problems Denver Owners Should Watch For

A handful of components tend to wear first on the 6.7L Power Stroke, and knowing them helps you catch trouble early:

  • Turbocharger wear, especially on 2011 and 2012 model years with the earlier ceramic-bearing design
  • The Bosch high-pressure fuel pump, a known weak point across most model years if fuel quality slips
  • EGR cooler buildup, which can clog with carbon over time and cause temperature spikes
  • NOx and EGT sensor faults, which are common and usually inexpensive to fix
  • Cold-weather issues like glow plug failure, weak batteries, and fuel gelling below about 20°F


Diesel fuel can start to gel in extreme cold, clogging filters and starving the engine of fuel. Glow plugs help the engine start in winter, and a weak one often shows up as a hard start on a cold morning. And a battery rated below 950 cold cranking amps just won't cut it here once temperatures drop.
